As a mother, my babies’ safety are my utmost priority. While raising my kids, we spent most of our days on the floor in my living room doing everything together: from tummy time, play time, story time and nap time. They had their first crawls, sits and steps right there on the floor and continued to do so as they grew bigger and bigger. I just knew that I had to make my living room as comfortable and safe as possible for my little ones. So, I rolled up my rug, put it away and replaced it with a playmat I bought from the stores.

But in providing my babies a safe space to grow, I had to compromise with playmats that were too bright and colourful, too thin, too slippery, and in some instances too smelly!

In the first years of my little buds’ lives, my beautiful living room rug had to be replaced by a playmat that just stuck out like a sore thumb! My mood was totally ruined by that garish playmat I had to see every moment of every day.

Not only that, the playmats were not of the best quality in terms of safety. My babies would lick and chew on the mats which were made out of hazardous materials. Since I have a Masters Degree in Industrial Technology, I have extensive knowledge about product materials and their health and environmental effects. Because of this knowledge, I knew the playmats that my babies were in direct contact with every day were not as safe as baby products should be. I was worried my little ones’ health might be compromised because of these mats.

I wondered to myself “Why is this the only way to make sure my kids are safe (even though it’s actually not that safe!)?” and “Why can’t I find an option that is not only functional and safe, but also easy on the eyes? Surely there are better options?!”
