Are you tired of scrolling through endless inspirations on Pinterest, but have yet decided on what design elements are best to accommodate your growing little buds? We get it!

As parents ourselves, we understand that you want to create an environment that is safe and enriching for your children to grow up in. At the same time, you still want your house to feel like home.

We’re here to tell you that you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice design over functionality. There are many ways to elevate your living spaces to accommodate your children. Here are 8 design elements we’ve compiled for you to get started with designing your home!

  1. Colours matters

For a long time it’s been assumed that children love everything colourful. Research has proven otherwise. In the first months of a baby’s life, they only see black and white. Imagine the overstimulation they receive as we quickly introduce a burst of colours in their environment.

Choosing neutral or soft colours can be beneficial for both children and parents. It makes your home look more sophisticated. You can start with the soft base then infuse concepts such as Scandinavian, Japanese Zen, JapanDi (Japanese-Scandinavian), minimalism, mid-century modern, or even rustic interior.

  2. Sophisticated storage

Aah, the clutter, it comes with the baby! We all know that clutter situations are unavoidable as long as you have babies and toddlers at home. Just remember that play times are important for their physical and mental development. The clutter, we can manage!

Having a sophisticated storage system will help immensely in reducing clutter and making the home look spacious. Freeing up space instantly brightens up the area which makes you calmer. Some good storage ideas are:

    • Square storage boxes which fits perfectly in your shelves or cupboards
    • Round soft rattan baskets that can sit in the corner. Also doubles as decoration!
    • Ottoman with hidden storage
  3. Round-edged furniture

Minimising hazards becomes the center of your design decisions. Adding baby proof tools such as a corner or edge guards on your furniture may add an element that clashes with your design concept. Instead, opt for furniture that is round or soft-edged. Better yet if the materials are sturdy which helps it stay in place. Avoid glass, marbles and any fragile furniture as they are prone to shatter.
  4. High quality materials

It’s a great joy when your little buds start to express their development. Some of this development includes putting things in their mouth. This is a good time to start investing in decorations, furniture, and even wall paints that are made from non-toxic materials.

Consider switching to wooden toys, blankets with natural dye, polyfoam-free couches, and other petroleum-free furniture.

  5. Neutral-themed and modern playmats

Most playmats come with extra colourful designs that mismatches home styles. Some are also made from plastic materials with synthetics dyes that are proven to emit toxic.

It was specifically to fix these problems that Buds & Bear creates toxic-free playmats with neutral and modern designs that will surely add a luxurious feel to your living spaces.

  6. Lightweight wall-hangings

Wall decoration makes living spaces more personal and adds a level of sophistication to the designs. With a small toddler around, safety precautions must be taken when hanging things up on the wall. Most importantly, secure the wall mountings properly.

Then you should consider these options:

    • Opt for paintings decor with light frames instead of heavier ones.
    • Use blunt and lightweight wall decor, avoid spiky ones. For example, a textured minimalist canvas makes a beautiful luxurious wall decoration whilst being on the lighter side.
    • Switch to wall-mounted mirrors instead of standing ones.
  7. Add cozy elements

Shared living space is the heart of a home. Mommy, daddy and little bud often spend most of their time together in the center of the house which encourages meaningful bonding. Best add some soft and plus decor that make it cozy.

We love some naturally dyed throw pillows and comforters on the couch. Layer the floor with our squishy foam-padded playmat. Add a beautiful scent using candle warmers instead of wick scented candles for a safer option. And you’re good to go!

Our playmats are also made with thick materials that make them oh so squishy. Spend time with your little buds on our mats. Read more about our design principles.

  8. Switch playmat from overly colourful childish designs to rug-type designs to elevate home interiors.

Switching to a rug type design playmat is the better option because of the calm and soothing colours which complements modern interiors. It also comes with thick and squishy padded foams which makes it super soft. Suitable for protecting the children and safe for the whole family to enjoy.

Playmats has been traditionally designed with kids in mind. Many don’t put home aesthetics and adults’ comfort into consideration, but Buds & Bear does! Check out our range of playmats designed for your beautiful home.
